Silkies

Silkies were first imported into the country around 1850.

They are a very docile, friendly breed making them ideal pets.

The weight for the standard large fowl silkie is 4lb for male and 3lb for the female but they come in varying sizes

Large, Bantam and Miniature sizes.

Silkies are classified as a light breed with soft silk like feathers which are ragged, giving them the fluffy appearance.  Silkies are flightless so only need a low fence enclosure.

Pure bred silkies should have five toes, feathery legs, black skin, dark eyes and turquoise or mulberry ear lobes.

Silkies come in five standardised colours Black, White, Gold, Blue, Partridge.

Cuckoo, Chocolate and Red are also available although not recognised in the breed standard.

Alison breeds silkies occasionally but mainly keeps the hens for their broody qualities.

The hens usually go broody after laying a dozen eggs or so and will raise 2-3 clutches of chicks a year.
