This semi-abstract house martin painting was produced for Sussex Day at Parham House and Gardens in 2025. The Sussex Martlet is an emblem for the Sussex flag, usually 6 gold martlets on a blue background. The martlet is a mythical bird with no feet, probably a swift but also considered to be house martins or swallows. Alison decided to represent house martins as they nest at Parham House.
As well as painting these lovely little migrant birds, Alison also cares for any that need help. Often chicks fledge a bit early and are picked up from the ground unable to fly. Alison will care for them until they’re flying well and able to fend for themselves.
Alison works closely with House Martin Conservation UK & Ireland and with Paul Stevens who is the Sussex Ornithology Society Hirundine Champion.
House Martins have declined in recent years and are now on the UK Red List of Conservation Concern. They are delightful little birds with glossy black upper parts with white underneath. It has a white rump with a shallow forked tail with distinctive white feathers covering its legs and toes. It spends much of its time in flight, collecting insect prey. The bird’s mud nest is usually located below the eaves of buildings. False next cups are available to encourage nesting or as an alternative to avoid nest collapse. They are summer migrants and spend their winters in Africa. Although still numerous and widespread, recent moderate declines earn them a place on the Red List. Information from the RSPB.
