Contact Alison about this painting

Brown hares are always a popular subject for artists. They are rarely seen where Alison lives, although there are populations along the South Downs. With their long black tipped ears and large black rimmed amber eyes and cream fur surround, they are striking animals, much larger than rabbits. Hares have long powerful hind legs which propel them forwards often in a zig-zag pattern. Hares are golden brown with a pale belly and white tail.

It is thought that hares were introduced into the UK in Roman times but the hare is now considered naturalised. Hares are mainly seen in open farmland, along woodland edges and grasslands. They are best seen at dusk or dawn in the early spring during breeding season. Females are often seen boxing away suitors rather than males fighting each other. More information about hares in the south can be found here

The Scratching Hare painting was produced in 2022 and shows a brown hare at the edge of a field next to a woodland.

Alison paints a lot of hares, some boxing, some scratching and a lot of running hares. She also accepts commissions for new hare paintings, therefore if you would like a specific painting please do ask.
