Red Deer Stags in Warnham Park, the stags are from a photo by Jonathan Lucas.

During September the stags start to split off from their bachelor herd and spend more time alone, gearing up for the rut. The cooler days and nights are greeted with the quintessential sounds of autumn, roaring stags and then the clash of antlers. Initially they are testing each other but as September drifts into October the fights become deadly serious.

The intelligent and prolific jackdaw are always in attendance, feeding on disturbed insects both on and around the deer. In spring they are often seen plucking dead hair directly from the deer and although they might be mildly irritating they are generally very well tolerated.
